What Is Periodontal Disease?

A happy mouth with a beautiful smile will keep you happy always. When do you think that the mouth feels happy? Is it when you eat your favorite food in the world? Unfortunately, it’s not. Having a healthy mouth is what makes not only your mouth but also your body elated. However, if you let harmful bacteria grow inside of your mouth it will catch numerous disease conditions. periodontal diseases are such common diseases that you can easily get if you are not careful enough about your health.

The soft and hard structures around a tooth are known as periodontal tissues. these include the gums, underlying jawbone, and the ligament between the tooth and the bone. Any disease condition in these periodontal tissues is known as periodontal.

There are two main types of periodontal diseases.

  1. Gingivitis or gum disease
  2. Periodontitis

The accumulation of plaque and tartar around the tooth substance causes the harmful bacteria to grow and proliferate allowing them to slowly disturb the periodontal tissues. bacteria can cause infection of the gums leading to gingivitis. symptoms of gingivitis may include:

  • Reddish gums
  • Swollen gums
  • Spontaneous bleeding from the gums
  • Bad smell of the mouth

If left untreated for a long time, gingivitis will then progress into periodontitis destroying the jawbone. Bacteria will gradually eat away the bone giving rise to the mobility of the tooth and ultimately will make the tooth fall off.

When the bone resorbs and gums around the tooth recede, a space between the gums and bone starts to create and this is called a periodontal pocket. Bacteria can accumulate, and proliferate more inside the pocket and the patient can no longer sanitize properly.

It is necessary to address periodontal diseases by professional removal of both superficial and deep plaque and calculi in the mouth. Professional scaling at All Kind Smiles will eliminate the periodontal pockets removing the habitats for harmful bacteria.

Dr. Pogodzinski will clean all the surfaces of teeth by using either more sophisticated devices like ultrasound scalers or hand scalers and curettes. At the end of the scaling, your Dr. Pogodzinski will polish your teeth giving them a new bright smile. Thus, professional scaling and polishing will remove all plaque and damaged tissue, leaving the tooth free of plaque and tartar. The main objective of professional cleaning is to regain the lost bone and other tissues but to slow the progression of the disease and achieve a state of health of the gums so that the patient can maintain good dental hygiene from there onwards.

It is normal to experience some tooth sensitivity after undergoing a professional cleaning, but it will recover soon in two to three days.

As we all know it’s better to prevent the disease than to cure it. You don’t need sophisticated preventive measures to avoid periodontal diseases. The only thing you need to do is to maintain good dental hygiene to prevent the accumulation of plaque and tartar by brushing your teeth regularly at least twice a day after breakfast and before bed at night, flossing at least once a day, ,eating a healthy diet full of nutrients and visiting Dr Pogodzinski at All Kind Smiles.
